Cufflinks

Cufflinks

Cufflinks are used to secure a French button cuff. Cufflinks are jewellery for men today, that it becoming more and more fashionable again, as well as ‘specialized’ when it comes to the designing skills of the designer. Simple cufflinks are made in the form of a double knot, with and elastic band connecting the two knots. Many different materials are used today to make cufflinks. Glass, stone, leather, precious metals, etc. are examples of materials used.

The different types of cufflinks today

Cufflinks come in different shapes, sizes, designs and colours.

The most traditional cufflink design, is the ‘double-panel’ look – two disc-shaped parts with a connecting post in the middle, or a connecting chain. The surfaces of the discs from the cufflinks are decorated.

Another kind is the ‘swivel bar’ type. With this kind of cufflink, only one side is decorated, with the other side being a swivel bar which connects the single disc to the post. It is possible to turn the swivel bar in different ways like necessary, depending whether it is for getting dressed or undressed.

Regarding the decoration of both these kinds of cufflinks, it can vary greatly these days. The use of a birthstone is possible, engraving of sterling silver or gold is as well possible, or even something that has a connection to one’s hobby. The Australian Company Cuff and Co came up with a very original idea of designing and decorating the normal cufflinks: they transform old Australian coins into cufflinks. These are not only elegant in style, but are original, as well as with historical value.

Like mentioned above, the simplest form of cufflinks, is the plain, double, silk knot. These knots of silk can be plain white to fit to the style of a formal white shirt, or they can be made from bright colours – something that is becoming fashionable these days. This kind of cufflinks was introduced by a Parisian shirt maker around 1904. This style has been quite popular since then, especially since they are in good taste and often much less expensive than a pair of cufflinks from (for example) precious metals. Since the introduction of this kind of cufflinks, a pair often accompanies a French cuff shirt when bought, as a complimentary gift to the customer.

When and where to wear cufflinks?

Cufflinks can be worn with a variety and combination of different styles. These include for example simple casualwear, business suits, informal styles, till exclusive styles, such as semi-formal and formal wear. In all these cases, the coin cufflinks from Cuff and Co Australia will be suitable.

With formal wear, cufflinks are essential, since it might have to match the white shirt studs. With formal wear, a few unwritten rules have to be followed, for example white pearl cufflinks that should preferably be worn with white tie occasions. Otherwise the choice and style of cufflinks are wide and open for the wearer to choose from.

Cufflinks are the ideal way for a man to express his individuality elegantly and in a stylish way. Whereas women strive to look different from other women at the same occasion, men do not have the freedom to choose styles as freely. They therefore should use this small opportunity to individualize themselves from other men while still staying within the boundaries required and expected from the general and broad society.
